BACKGROUND

We stumbled into the Tiny Wood Stove business after trying to source a stove for our Tiny Home a 1966 Airstream travel trailer. We wanted a modest sized wood burner for affordable off-grid dry heat. After searching the internet to find every possible solution we compiled a list of all the options. What we found was a bunch of stoves that were not ideal for our situation. They weren’t the right size, they didn’t have the right features or they were beyond our budget. So we set out to create the perfect stove for small spaces. The Dwarf is efficient, durable and affordable!

BODY CONSTRUCTION

The sturdy body is made of thick 3/16″ – 5/16th Steel Plate.

DOOR

The door is made of high-quality cast iron with a large fire viewing window for a classy look while providing optimal heat retention.

FLUE OUTLET

The 5” flue outlet can exit out the top or the rear of the stove depending on your needs. Exiting out the rear of the stove allows the entire top surface to be used as a cooking plate while exiting out the top of the stove allows are tighter installation with less clearances.

AIR CONTROLS

The Dwarf gives you complete control over primary, secondary and tertiary air supplies. The airtight primary and secondary air are controlled by separate levers on the bottom of the stove and the tertiary air-wash is controlled by a slide valve just above the door.

FIREBOX

The Dwarf firebox is made of durable cast iron and refractory fire brick. Cast iron is very durable for continuous use, and the fire bricks reflect heat back into the firebox for a more efficient burn.

BURNS CHUNKS OF WOOD: 10-12″ Long

RIDDLING GRATE + ASH PAN

The bottom of the firebox is a cast iron grate with a mechanical lever (located lower left of door) that engages the floor of the grate sifting out ash from the firebox. This handy feature is a must for coal, and helps to quickly and efficiently clean out the firebox. Below the grate is a removable ash pan for easy disposal.

OPTIONAL ADD-ONS

You can customize the look of your stove by adding the tall cast iron legs or wood storage stand. Enamel doors are available in your choice of colors.  Factory heat shields are available for clearance reduction.

CLEARANCES

16” sides, 18” rear, 36″ top to ceiling. You can reduce required clearances by up to 2/3 with a properly designed heat shield.

FUELS

The Dwarf can safely burn wood, coal or compressed logs up to 12 inches long.

Tiny Wood Stove was great to deal with. Dan went above and beyond to deal promptly and fairly with concerns we had about the oven. Note: our flue design and extreme cold temperatures (-30 C) made using the oven unfeasible for us but it should work well for others who don’t have similar issues.
Now for the review of the Dwarf 5kw stove without the oven attached. If you’re familiar with larger wood stoves, the small size takes some getting used to. We’re using it in a 12×24 cabin – anything larger would have been too big for us. Even at -30C we can have the window open a crack and the stove dampered down. We are limited in space and did add a heat shield around the stove – more for our peace of mind than an actually overheating concern. The stove is easy to light, drafts well. We do put our 8-10″ firewood in length wise to stop it from rolling out when the door is opened. The grate in front could be a couple inches higher to help keep wood in but at this time, that’s our only suggestion for improvement.
Overall a great product and support from Tiny Wood Stoves is awesome.

I love it! After looking at many small stoves to put in my 5th wheel, I found the 5KW to be the best. I have a 300 square ft RV and it heats it up from 59F to 72F in about 25 min. Once I cut a hole in the ceiling (the most daunting part) , the rest of the installation was super easy. Dan emailed me back promptly every time I had questions or concerns. The customer service is spot on. I will definitely add the oven in the future. I would highly recommend anyone that wants a wood stove in their RV or trailer to go with these guys.

I could not be happier. It was well worth the wait while it was on backorder. I had considered many other brands but the Dwarf 5KW was just perfectly sized for my application in my 16′ Yurt. As the yurt is uniquely shaped with high ceilings, dome and minimally insulated walls I went back and forth between the 4kw and 5kw. Dan helped me work through the decision and he was spot on with his recommendation of the 5kw. I can keep the yurt very warm or even like a sauna if I want at 7,500′ in Durango Colorado with 15 degree temps and 3 ft of snow around it. They really package each item I received with great care. I got a tracking number and there was not a scratch on any of the items when they arrived. Great company with really friendly customer service. I highly recommend ordering a Dwarf stove. They are amazing!

The stove installed in the shepherds wagon I built for a client. It all installed really well and the stove pipe went together great! I want to tell you this: you are one of the best online companies I have had the privilege to do business with! Not only is this Dwarf stove one of the best stoves I have ever seen in that size, it is beautiful when all lit up and burning. Also your support was absolutely the best! Thank you for the great product. I know that the owner will appreciate its warmth and ease of use.

This review has been a few months in the making. I purchased the dwarf 5kw in January (it is now April) and I could not be happier with this product. I had lots of questions before purchasing about what size I would need, how to install the flue, clear space, and Dan was there every step of the way with prompt answers to my questions. He gave very good suggestions and videos to watch to help me with every part of installation.
My wife and I live in a 36 ft 5th wheel and this stove had no problem keeping the trailer warm on cold windy nights. We have used it as our primary heating source and it has been nice to have almost no cost of propane or electricity. Where we live the temperature regularly hits 0-10 degrees F and you can expect to pay $300 a month in propane during the coldest months. This stove will easily pay for itself in 2 seasons. I believe you get what you pay for and this stove is nothing but high quality and is built to last.
I also want to mention their customer service. When my stove arrived and I had unboxed it, i found to my dismay that the glass on the door had shattered. I contacted Dan about it and a new one was shipped to me free of charge in two days. These people truly want you to have a good experience with them and enjoy this product as much as they do.

Installed my 5KW stove last fall. I ordered all parts I needed including a direct-air kit and some accessories from Tiny Wood Stove. I got all the advise and help I needed from the good folks there and installed it all in my cabin that is used for a getaway by me and my family. Installation was trouble free with guidance and information from Dan and the crew. The stove performed flawlessly and kept the cabin warm even on the coldest nights. It was a pleasure doing business with Dan and can only highly advise others looking for a wood stove and anything that goes with that to get it with Tiny Wood Stove. I have not been compensated for this review, I’m just a guy that appreciates a quality product. Jesse

My husband Brian and I bought your 5w stove in November or December of last year. We just love it!! It has kept us warm all winter in our 5th wheel camper here in North Central Wisconsin. Alot of people ask us… how are you making it through the winter? We tell them we are plenty warm, our dwarf stove is amazing! Heats up our area in only a few minutes once you get the fire going. We love sitting by it every evening and cooking on it during the day. We really don’t know what we would’ve done without it! It’s top quality and we recommend it to anyone who is looking for a smaller woodstove. We are very grateful to you all for your great friendly service too😊Thank you!!

I installed the 5K stove last fall and it has been a total pleasure! I have the stove installed in our 21×33′ basement which is a walkout in the back and two full-size windows in the front. The burn time is amazing if I load the stove at 9-10 pm, I wake up to a hot bed of coals in the morning at 5-6 am!!! I love the stove and my heating bill was the cheapest winter yet, basically, my heat unit did not turn on while the stove was running. Great product! Love it

Love the stove. Like the option of stove pipe out the back. Lots of space for large wok filled with rocks for steam. Heats our 7’x7’sauna quickly and burns for a long time. Only problem and reason for 4 star instead of 5 was packaging. Stove was secured to pallet with leg holes. Crate was beat up pretty bad leg holes were damaged. I had to re-drill and tap to put legs on by instruction from Tinywood stove rep. Happy with purchase

Great question! Burning all night is a big deal for a small stove, especially if it’s your sole heat source off-grid.

Yes, the Dwarf 5kW can absolutely burn all night if set up properly. It takes a little practice to get your air controls and fuel dialed in. Check out our article on the upside-down fire method for the most reliable technique for all-night burns.

The Dwarf is designed for indoor use, but the EPA doesn’t allow a stove to be sold for use in residential structures in the United States unless it’s passed some pretty stringent emissions standards. To make the Dwarf pass, we would have to severely restrict the air controls (i.e. weld the primary air shut and prop the secondary air open). Doing that would make the stove a lot less useful, especially in smaller spaces where you need to be able to precisely control your burn rate.

Since the Dwarf is not an EPA stove, it can only be used for spaces that are not subject to residential building codes like buses, vans, yurts, tiny homes on wheels, certain kinds of cabins, treehouses, workshops, shabins, etc. Technically, the classification is “For portable and temporary use only.”

If your cabin is subject to residential building codes and you’re in the US, you’d probably be violating EPA regulations if you installed one in your cabin. If it’s a “temporary” structure on skids, then local laws are going to dictate what you can or can’t do with it. If you’re not sure, you can always check with your local code enforcement office. If you have insurance on the structure, you may also want to check with your insurance company about their requirements for your installation.

Gena- Good question. Glass is technically a non-combustible material, and so could be within the stove’s clearances without a problem. However, other things around the window like the casing and sill typically are combustible, so it’s generally best just to treat the whole wall as if it’s combustible. Curtains can also be an issue if you have them.

The standard clearances for the Dwarf are 16″ to the sides and 18″ to the back, however, you can reduce the required clearances with heat shields. Since you’re not likely to want to cover your picture window with heat shields, I suggest the Dwarf Heat Shield Kit, which attaches to the stove itself to keep a low profile. The Heat Shield kit reduces clearances by 50%, so that’d be 8″ to the sides and 9″ to the back.

Keep in mind that the stovepipe has its own clearance needs, so you’ll likely need to either use all insulated pipe, or attach additional shielding to the single-wall stovepipe. Drop us a line at support@tinywoodstove.com if you need any help figuring out your flue parts and shielding required.

I bought the 5kw stove with the tiny house installation kit. The install was easy taking me probably about 8 total hours. The quality if the pipe was also impressive Seam welded. I would recommend this product and company. Also the customer service is excellent as well. I unboxed the stove and the components to check for damage, one firebrick had the corner broken off. I emailed the company and they sent a replacement that arrived in less than a week.

This stove replaces a smaller wood stove from a different manufacturer that looked beautiful but had serious problems drawing air. Its top speed was putt-putt, so after a winter of wearing four layers of clothes and breathing smoke, I got rid of it last spring and purchased this one instead. My expectations were not very high due to my previous stove (was the flaw in the building or chimney isntead of the stove?), but this little stove has wildly exceeded them.

    Pros:
    • It warm the place up handsomely (15’ square, top of ceiling 11’)
    • and quickly—~50° to ~70° in about 30 minutes with outside temps in the thirties
    • It wins the “cute” award from my wife
    • The huge glass window is a big bonus. I love seeing the flames from across the room
    • Love the ash grate thing, if I could get it in straight (see below)
    • The whole stove is quite handsome.

    Cons:
    • I can’t get the ash grate to settle in straight. I followed directions explicitly, repeatedly, and it’s crookedy regardless of orientation
    • The top airflow knob is stuck open. Like welded-tight stuck. I’ll have to partially disassemble the stove to fix it, and that’s not happening this winter.
As you can see, my gripes are few and minor.

I fully recommend this stove. Buy it already.

      Doug-

Thanks so much for your review! Glad to hear you’re enjoying the stove. Sorry to hear about your trouble with the air wash and the fire grate. It looks like our support team started with troubleshooting, but those issues aren’t resolved yet.

For the air wash, the most common reason it gets stuck is the knob is screwed in too tight. The silver knob above the door attaches to the sliding valve via a threaded rod through the stove body. If the knob gets installed too tightly, then the mechanism can clamp onto the stove body and be impossible to move. Try turning the knob counterclockwise to loosen it. If you can’t turn it by hand, you can use a pair of pliers to grab it for a bit more leverage to free it. But if you do use pliers, use a thick cloth between the pliers and the knob to help avoid scratching the finish of the knob.

For the crooked coal bar, it sounds like something might not be sitting quite right in your firebox. There’s a bit of room for adjustment in those components, so I expect we’ll be able to fix the problem by loosening a couple of bolts and retightening them. I’ll send you a message directly to troubleshoot.

I am just so pleased. The stove arrived earlier than I was expecting which was amazing because the following weekend my family came to visit and we are able to get the stove installed and chimney built. I wasn’t able to order the chimney parts from Tiny Wood Stove as it was out of stock but we were able to convert the 5” to a 6” pipe that we purchased as a kit from Tractor Supply. I can attest that the costs of the chimney parts offered by Tiny Wood Stove are in line with the cost of parts from Tractor Supply so do yourself a favor and order it all from Tiny Wood Stove.

The stove is just awesome, so cute and well-constructed. The air controls keep the fire burning well and I love watching the fire through the glass. Also a big thumbs-up for the included fire-proof mitt that came with – a really nice surprise and very handy to rearrange the logs. I want to thank everyone at Tiny wood Stove for keeping me informed on delivery schedules and checking in with me. I highly recommend Tiny Wood Stove if you are looking for a way to heat your tiny home, or in my case, a 450 sq. ft. cabin in the woods.

We purchased the 5kw just a little over a year ago. We ar snow in our second winter with this stove and could not be happier! We live in a 28’x8.5’ tiny house (roughly 250 square feet) at 7000 feet of elevation and it is just perfect. It keeps us so toasty, even in the dead of winter. It has been so fun learning how to operate this stove efficiently to get the longest and slowest burn times. We live in an area with amazing access to pine, juniper, and oak so the mix of hard and soft woods is so key. Don’t think twice about buying this stove! Customer service is amazing and the quality of this stove can’t be beat. I love the cast iron so much and it retains the heat so well. I can go on and on.

      Hi Cameron,

Getting the longest possible overnight burn is an art in itself. The Dwarf’s separate primary and secondary air controls and airtight firebox allow you to draw out the burn much longer than other similarly sized stoves. Using the upside-down fire method or high BTU content wood like compressed logs we’re generally able to get around 10 hours with the 5kW, 8 hours with the 4kW, and 6 hours with the 3kW Standard. (The 3kW LITE has a combined primary and secondary control, so it’s harder to burn an upside-down fire, and burn time is limited to around 4 hours.)

The size is perfect, design is modern enough and the flame control functions of the stove work very well. She can handle small to large volume logs as long as they are 10″ or less. All of the flue parts and accessories are high quality for a reasonable cost. The tiny house team has GREAT customer service for all the DIYers out there. Overall a high value product and a great team to help you along the way. They live tiny just like us so they know what works best !

What are the screws on the side of the bod for? If I wanted to build a heat shield can I use these spots for mounting it? Or are these screws needed to hold some internal assembly in place?

Thanks for the question. The allen screws on the sides of the Dwarf Stove are for mounting accessories like the Dwarf Heat Shield Kit. You could also use them for mounting a custom heat shield if you wanted to build one yourself. There are four hex head bolts on the back of the stove that hold the air intake manifold in place, but you can also use those for mounting accessories as long as you replace them with sufficiently long screws to also support the intake manifold.

Great small stove; very efficient and heats my 1,000 square foot cottage to where I can crack open windows upstairs. Will upgrade to add the stove when able.

This product was ideal for my small shed (~ 200 sqft) in Eastern Idaho. It has kept me plenty warm all winter and burns perfectly every time. The customer service was top notch and they kept me apprised of all updates to my parts as they were on backorder when I purchased my stove. Cody was great in responding to questions I had regarding installation prior to my stove arriving.

What kind of structure are you heating? Cabin

I purchased the Dwarf 5k with the side exit and it’s great! My installation was a bit tricky because my cabin has lighting, two layers of plywood, and insulation in the ceiling/roof so I didn’t want to go through the roof. I ended up going out the side wall and then through the eaves. Another challenge is my roof is 12/12 so it’s very steep. Another reason I didn’t want to climb up there. I realize I may need to add one more section of insulated chimney up top for proper clearance, but it works great. On my first test fire it really draws the air through the stove and burns quite well. Unfortunately I took so long to get done that winter in Texas is over, so I won’t be able to really enjoy it until next winter.

With living full time in an RV in Montana and wanting to be more self sufficient my husband and I ordered the 5K wood stove and the RV conversion kit and even in almost -50°F with some assistance can keep us warm enough.
