Dwarf Cookstove Assembly

Before you begin

If possible, your hearth should be complete, so that you don't have to move your cookstove once it's assembled.  Consult the Dwarf Manual for instructions on your hearth, proper clearances, and heat shields.

You Will Need:

  • Utility Knife
  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • Adjustable Wrench
  • Flashlight
  • Stove Cement

You May Need:

An assistant to help lift and maneuver your cookstove.

The Dwarf stove weighs 150 lbs fully assembled, and the oven weighs 50 lbs, for a combined weight of 200 lbs.  Most people will need assistance at some point to safely move and lift their stove or oven.

Step 1: Prepare your Dwarf 5kW Stove

If your stove is not yet assembled, complete the assembly instructions in the Dwarf Manual through step 5 (installing the air controls) and step 6 (installing the legs or stand).  Stand your stove upright and set it in place on the hearth.  If it's possible to do so at this point, anchor your stove to the hearth.

If you are adding an oven to an already assembled stove, remove the baffle from the top of the firebox, remove any stovepipe from the stove (if installed), and remove the flue flange from the stove. You will no longer need the stock flue flange with the oven configuration.

If the cover plate is installed on the rear exit of your stove, remove it and place it covering the stove's top exit. Don't bolt in place yet.

We generally recommend completing your stove's first burn outdoors, since high-temperature paint can give off some chemical fumes while it's curing.  However, since the fully assembled cookstove is so tall and heavy, it can be impractical to move it into your house once fully assembled.

If you complete your first burn indoors, be sure to open as many windows as possible, and consider setting up a fan to blow air into your space for a few hours while the paint cures.  Off-gassing will stop once the cookstove has reached a sufficiently high temperature.

Stove Flange Removal

Step 2: Install your compact rear exit tee

Open the oven crate and remove any plastic and paper wrapping. Open the oven door and remove the contents including the wire rack, compact rear exit tee, and hardware.  Close and latch the door.

Install the compact rear exit tee on the rear exit of your Dwarf 5kW stove by loosely bolting it to the stove. Thread the bolts from inside the stove body out through the mounting holes inside the tee. Don’t fully tighten the bolts yet. You want the tee to be snug with the ability to adjust side-to-side with some effort.

Step 3: Install your Oven

If possible, anchor your stove to your hearth prior to installing your oven.  At minimum, assemble the cookstove as close as possible to its final location.  The Dwarf Cookstove Combo is heavy and tall, which can make it awkward to move once assembled.  If you do need to move a fully assembled cookstove, be sure to have a second person to assist.

To install the oven, place the oven body on top of the stove, aligning the mounting holes with the cover plate and stove mounting holes. Bolt the oven down through the cover plate to the body of the stove and secure it with washers and nuts. Make sure the back of the oven is perfectly square with the top of the stove. Once you're satisfied with the alignment, tighten the oven mounting hardware.

Insert single wall pipe into the top of the rear exit tee. You'll want to ensure this pipe is plumb and sits as close to the oven body as possible. Once you're happy with the position, tighten down the bolts securing the tee to the stove body.

Remove the single wall pipe, cover the inside of the top of the rear exit tee and the outside of the male end of your single wall pipe with stove cement, and connect them together. Use a bubble level if you want to ensure that both your stove and your stovepipe are perfectly plumb.

Thoroughly clean off any excess stove cement before firing your stove. It is very difficult to remove stove cement once it's cured.

If this is a new installation, resume the Dwarf Stove assembly at Step 8 of the Dwarf Manual. If you are retrofitting the oven to an existing installation, reinstall the baffle in your stove and reconnect your flue system.

If you are retrofitting a new oven to an existing Dwarf Stove, the paint on the new oven will need to be cured the same as when you first installed your stove.  See the Dwarf Manual for the heat curing procedure.  If you are curing your paint indoors, you should provide adequate ventilation by opening windows and pointing a fan inward for air circulation if necessary.  Do not use an exhaust fan, as that may compete with the stove for draft.

Planning Ahead

If you are installing a Dwarf 5kW but planning ahead for a future addition of the Dwarf Oven, you can install your 5kw stove now and easily retrofit the oven on top later. It makes sense to plan your installation, knowing that you'll later be adding the oven. Here are three options:

  1. Order the Compact Rear Exit Tee with your stove. Install your flue using this component and when your oven arrives, all you'll need to do is bolt it on top. The oven comes with another compact rear exit tee packed inside so you may ship this back for a refund. We don't uncrate the ovens before shipping so we cannot remove the extra tee prior to shipping.
  2. Install your stove using the top exit flue flange until the oven comes. Once you get the oven and install the included compact rear exit tee, you'll need to move your stove about 6" forward to ensure you still have proper clearances behind the stove since the tee extends about 6" from the back of the stove. Plan your hearth with this in mind.
  3. Order a standard rear exit tee and install your stove using this with the rear flue flange. Once you get the oven, swap out the standard rear exit tee for the included compact rear exit tee. You'll need to move your stove back by about 2" since the compact rear exit tee takes up less space and you want to align it with your installed flue pipe. You won't be able to return your standard rear exit tee since it will be used.
