Lou and his partner Dana have been exploring the tiny lifestyle for the past six years, moving from a van to a sailboat, and now on their off-grid property in the mountains of New York. They installed their Dwarf stove in their shipping container office that they use for some quiet work time.
In this interview, they are discussing their journey to their off-grid property and the role the Dwarf stove plays in their everyday life as a family of three. They share their practical experiences with the installation process, the stove's performance, and its impact on their daily life.
The off-grid lifestyle is not just about downsizing; it's about embracing simplicity and sustainability.
For Lou and his family, this journey has spanned six years, beginning in a van, progressing to a sailboat, and finally leading to a unique off-grid home and homestead in the mountains of New York.
We had the opportunity to speak with Lou about his experiences and how the Dwarf stove from Tiny Wood Stove has become an essential part of their everyday life.
Starting the Tiny Living Adventure
Lou and Dana embarked on their adventure six years ago. They began their journey in a van, later transitioned to a sailboat, and ultimately found their current home in the mountains of New York.
Now they are building and improving a container work setup for their family on their homestead, and after a year of slowly but surely making their space feel functional, they added a Tiny Wood Stove to keep warm and cozy during the cold New York winters.
We talked to them about adding a Tiny Wood Stove to their office, winter living off-grid, and how they've upgraded their property during the last year.
Choosing the Dwarf Stove
When it came time to select a heating solution for their shipping container office, the Dwarf stove stood out for several reasons.
"I love the look of the stove, the story behind the brand, the size, and the incredible air controls," Lou shared with us.
The decision wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was about finding a stove that aligned with their values and practical needs.
Installation Experience
With support from our stove experts for planning their setup and the install, Lou found the process of setting up his Tiny Wood Stove straightforward.
"The installation process was very easy.
It was nice to have support regarding clearances, but I think most people could tackle a stove install in a couple of days with no problem."
Using the Dwarf Stove
The true quality of any heating solution is its capacity to not only add coziness, fight moisture, or add to the design of a space, but to actually keep the space warm and comfortable (especially in the harsh winters of upstate New York).
Lou’s experience with the Dwarf stove has been overwhelmingly positive, both in terms of heating capacity and adding comfort to his office space.
"I love our stove so much! It’s incredible how well the airflow controls work, how hot it can burn with so little wood, how well it lights, and how slow it can burn on the proper settings."
Lou emphasized the significant impact the stove has had on his comfort during the cold months.
"The Dwarf stove is one of my absolute favorite things we’ve installed in our shipping container. It has made a massive difference in our comfort during the cold winter months, and I love the glass door and spend hours just sitting watching the fire."
He doesn't hesitate recommending the Dwarf stove to other folks based on his experience with the stove:
"Yes! These stoves are amazing. They are so beautiful, so efficient, so functional, and they are such a joy to use."
You did such a great job designing your stove, it's really incredible how well it works! Thank you : )
