Raise your chimney when you park and pack it away when you drive. What’s Included

We’ve put together the parts you need to add a detachable chimney section above your vehicle roof exit and close the chimney up for travel. MightyVent insulated chimney pipe is UL 103 Type HT listed and built for small wood stoves. It has 304 stainless steel on both walls, 1.18″ of ceramic fiber insulation, and twist-lock joints that go together in one turn.

This kit includes all components listed above. MightyVent pipe sections and fittings come with their own clamps, so there’s no separate clamp to add. The pipe’s clamp locks the detachable section to your roof exit pipe, and the driving cap’s clamp holds the cap in place for travel. The carry bag keeps soot off your gear when the detachable section is packed away on travel days or for the off-season. The detachable section fits in the bag with your chimney cap still attached, so it packs away in one piece.

How Tall Does a Wood Stove Chimney Need to Be on a Vehicle?

For vehicle installs like RVs, buses, and vans, we recommend a 20″ detachable chimney for the best function of your wood stove. Install your roof exit so the insulated pipe ends just high enough above the roof for the next section to attach. When you’re parked and using your stove, twist the 20″ detachable section onto that pipe, clamp the joint, and move your chimney cap to the top. Before you drive, take off the cap and the detachable section, slide the driving cap over the top pipe section, and clamp it. Use the driving cap the same way for off-season storage. Store the sooty section in the carry bag. Never light the stove with the driving cap on.

There is no official industry standard for wood stoves installed in vehicles like RVs, buses, or vans. A chimney on a permanent building must extend 3′ above the roof, or 2′ above anything within 10′, whichever is taller. Following that rule isn’t usually practical on a vehicle. The industry standard for wood stoves installed on boats only requires that the chimney extends to some point above the deck.

Is a Detachable Chimney Required?

No, a detachable chimney is optional, but it’s usually a good idea. Vehicle installs tend to be short, so an extra 20″ of height can dramatically improve your wood stove’s performance. The chimney is the “engine” of the wood stove, and more height means stronger draft. A stove with a too-short chimney will be smoky, temperamental, hard to light, and hard to burn efficiently.

We have seen countless vehicle installs, some with our recommended detachable chimneys and some with stubby chimneys just clearing the roof. Both usually work, but the ones with detachable chimneys burn more efficiently, are easier and more pleasant to use, and need less maintenance.
