Resources for heating a building

Where should I put the wood stove?
For the best heat distribution, place your stove near the center of your space. In long, narrow layouts, a stove at one end can leave the far end cooler, which might be nice if you prefer a cool sleeping area. Placement near a door helps minimize mess tracking in and out bark chips and wood ash. Mounting the stove a bit higher, such as on a stand, makes it easier to tend the fire and adds room for wood storage, but don’t overdo it. Since heat rises, keeping the stove within about 24 inches of the floor helps warm the whole space evenly.
Clearances & Heat Shields for Safe Installation
Clearances are one of the biggest safety factors in any wood stove setup. High heat can cause nearby materials to slowly dry out and ignite, even years down the road. Installed and maintained properly, a wood stove is one of the safest, coziest ways to heat your off-grid space. But cutting corners on clearance just isn’t worth the risk. Without any shielding, you’ll need at least 18” of space around your stove, which is often impractical in small spaces. Heat shields, whether wall-mounted or attached to the stove or pipe, can cut those distances by up to two-thirds while keeping your space safe and comfortable. Before you install, get more details and review the clearance requirement tables for various installation scenarios in our full Clearances and Heat Shields article.
Building a Hearth
A good hearth or stand does more than make your stove look great; it protects your floor from embers and reduces heat transfer to nearby materials. Most setups need a non-combustible surface under the stove, plus a ½” insulating layer like mineral fiber board or cement backer board. Whether you build a floor-level hearth, a raised stand, or use an integrated Dwarf wood storage stand, a solid hearth adds safety, function, and style to your space. See examples and read more in this article on hearths and creative wood storage stands.
Cutting a hole isn’t so scary
Cutting a hole in your roof or wall for the chimney pipe sounds intimidating, but it’s easier than you think. With a little planning and careful measuring, you can make a clean, leak-free opening for your chimney in just a few steps. Most of our team and thousands of Tiny Wood Stove customers have done it successfully. When it’s time to install, follow this guide to mark, measure, and cut with confidence (you can find it again later in the LEARN section of our website).
Roof exit vs wall exit
One of the biggest choices you’ll make when installing a wood stove is how to vent it: through the roof or out the wall. Each option has trade-offs in cost, performance, and complexity. Roof exits usually draft better and cost less, while wall exits offer more flexibility around obstructions or flat roofs. The right choice depends on your structure, budget, and comfort level with the install. Our full guide walks through the pros and cons to help you decide what’s best for your setup.
What maintenance is required?
Maintaining a wood stove is simpler than many people expect. Routine care for a Dwarf Stove mostly comes down to a few easy habits: empty the ash pan before each fire, clean the glass when needed, brush out the flue a few times each season, and occasionally inspect the firebrick and door gaskets. These small steps keep your stove burning safely and efficiently without much time or effort. Read our full maintenance guide for more details and step-by-step instructions.
