Where should I put the wood stove?
In tents and yurts where a wall exit is often the most practical plan for the chimney, you’ll be placing the stove by a wall rather than in the center of the space. Placement near a door helps minimize mess tracking in and out bark chips and wood ash. Installing away from the sleeping area might be nice if you prefer to sleep cool, or near the sleeping area if you want to make it easier to stay warm at night. Mounting the stove a bit higher, such as on a stand, makes it easier to tend the fire and adds room for wood storage, but don’t overdo it. Since heat rises, keeping the stove within about 24 inches of the floor helps warm the whole space evenly.
Clearances & Heat Shields for Safe Tent Installation
Clearances are one of the biggest safety factors in any wood stove setup. High heat can cause nearby materials to slowly dry out and ignite, even years down the road. Installed and maintained properly, a wood stove is one of the safest, coziest ways to heat your off-grid space. But cutting corners on clearance just isn’t worth the risk. Without any shielding, you’ll need at least 18” of space around your stove, which is often impractical in small spaces. Heat shields, whether wall-mounted or attached to the stove or pipe, can cut those distances by up to two-thirds while keeping your space safe and comfortable. Building a Hearth
A good hearth or stand does more than make your stove look great; it protects your floor from embers and reduces heat transfer to nearby materials. Most setups need a non-combustible surface under the stove, plus a ½” insulating layer like mineral fiber board or cement backer board. Whether you build a floor-level hearth, a raised stand, or use an integrated Dwarf wood storage stand, a solid hearth adds safety, function, and style to your space. Roof exit vs wall exit in a tent or yurt
In yurts and tents, a wall exit is usually the best choice. Soft roofs don’t provide the solid support needed to hold the weight of a chimney, so running the pipe through a wall is safer and more stable. Most tent and yurt manufacturers offer stove pipe jacks designed for this purpose, making installation easier (we also have a kit for this). Once outside, the chimney can be secured to a post for support. If a roof exit is necessary, you’ll need to build a sturdy frame tied into the rigid structure to keep the flue stable and secure.
