Resources for heating a vehicle

Where should I put the wood stove?
For the best heat distribution, place your stove near the center of your space. In the long, narrow layouts common to vehicles, a stove at one end can leave the far end cooler, which might be nice if you prefer a cool sleeping area. Placement near a door helps minimize mess tracking in and out bark chips and wood ash. Mounting the stove a bit higher, such as on a stand, makes it easier to tend the fire and adds room for wood storage, but don’t overdo it. Since heat rises, keeping the stove within about 24 inches of the floor helps warm the whole space evenly.
Clearances & Heat Shields for Safe Vehicle Installation
Clearances are one of the biggest safety factors in any wood stove setup. High heat can cause nearby materials to slowly dry out and ignite, even years down the road. Installed and maintained properly, a wood stove is one of the safest, coziest ways to heat your off-grid space. But cutting corners on clearance just isn’t worth the risk. Without any shielding, you’ll need at least 18” of space around your stove, which is often impractical in small spaces. Heat shields, whether wall-mounted or attached to the stove or pipe, can cut those distances by up to two-thirds while keeping your space safe and comfortable. Before you install, get more details and review the clearance requirement tables for various installation scenarios in our full Clearances and Heat Shields article.
Building a Hearth
In a vehicle, your hearth needs to do more than look good; it has to be safe, sturdy, and lightweight. A proper hearth protects your floor from embers and reduces heat transfer to nearby materials. Use non-combustible materials with a ½” insulating layer such as mineral fiber board or cement backer board. Keep materials as light as possible and securely bolt everything down to handle vibration and movement on the road. In very small spaces, maximizing every inch matters, so consider a hearth that adds storage without taking up extra room. See examples and read more in this article on hearths and creative wood storage stands.
Why we recommend roof exits in vehicles
If you’re installing a wood stove in a vehicle, a roof exit is almost always the way to go. It keeps your chimney compact, performs better, and avoids vulnerable exterior pipe extending off the side of your rig. A roof exit also gives you stronger draft and easier cold starts. Cutting a hole in your roof might sound intimidating, but with the right parts and a little planning, it’s a straightforward, reliable setup that’s been proven by thousands of successful installs. You can read more about the theory of flue design and the pros and cons of roof vs wall exits in this article.
Cutting a hole isn’t so scary
Cutting a hole in your roof for the chimney pipe sounds intimidating, but it’s easier than you think. With a little planning and careful measuring, you can make a clean, leak-free opening for your chimney in just a few steps. Most of our team and thousands of Tiny Wood Stove customers have done it successfully. When it’s time to install, follow this guide to mark, measure, and cut with confidence (you can find it again later in the LEARN section of our website).
Chimney height for vehicles
For vans, RVs, and buses, a detachable chimney is the safest, most practical option. Keep a short stub for travel, then add a section when parked to reach the right height for good draft and clean exhaust. A couple of feet above the roofline usually works best to prevent smoke issues and turbulence, and our modular parts make setup and takedown quick and secure. When using the Kit Builder to plan your parts list, it will automatically add the parts you need for the detachable chimney. Read more about detachable chimneys for vehicles in this article.
What maintenance is required?
Maintaining a wood stove is simpler than many people expect. Routine care for a Dwarf Stove mostly comes down to a few easy habits: empty the ash pan before each fire, clean the glass when needed, brush out the flue a few times each season, and occasionally inspect the firebrick and door gaskets. These small steps keep your stove burning safely and efficiently without much time or effort. Read our full maintenance guide for more details and step-by-step instructions.
