I agree, it would absolutely be helpful to have square footage as a guideline in theory. But especially for smaller spaces, square footage is not a good way to size a stove. There are just too many variables. How tall is the space, and how well-insulated? How cold does it get over the winter? Is the stove the primary heat source, or just for supplemental heat and ambiance?
A 350 square foot tiny house on wheels in Texas is going to have vastly different heating needs than the exact same space in Alaska. A 250 square foot vacation cabin with a loft, spray-foam insulation, and an electric heater is going to be very different from a off-grid 250 square foot school bus.
