For most small to medium sized RVs (< 26’) our Dwarf 3kw is a good option. That said there are many variables to consider when sizing a stove including usage, climate and space efficiency. Larger RVs may benefit from the Dwarf 4kw and large RVs traveling in very cold climates might even want the Dwarf 5kw. We have base kits for different spaces then depending on your setup, you’ll need one or more additional pieces of chimney pipe. Like many projects, there is a vast range for the total cost. While price is an important factor, total value is what we recommend you focus on. While you can find a cheaper wood stove elsewhere, it’s wise to invest in the best solution upfront for a wood stove that will last a lifetime, will burn efficiently, and comes with support from a team of folks who live small just like you. Burn time depends on fuel quality, fuel quantity, and air settings. In general, you can expect 3KW 3-5hrs, 4KW 4-6hrs & 5KW 6-8hrs. We’ve gotten the best results with burn time using compressed logs. For more info check out our article on How to Make your Wood Stove Burn Longer.

Most folks installing a wood stove in an RV are going to be limited on space. Therefor, building a wall mounted heat shield tends to make the most sense. This will allow you to reduce clearance requirements for the stove and single wall pipe down to only 6” from any part of the stove or pipe to nearby combustible materials protected by the heat shield. It’s possible but presents a lot of challenges. If you are able to install in the main body of the RV where the slide outs will not interfere with the chimney pipe exiting the roof, that’s going to be significantly easier. If you absolutely have to install in a slide out, you’ll need your flue to exit the wall and you’ll want to check to ensure the additional weight of the stove in your slide out is ok by the manufacturers requirements. Wall exits on vehicles can be done but are not ideal due to how far off the side of your rig the pipe and mounting brackets will extend (about 9”).

Many folks are nervous about cutting a hole through their roof. Fortunately, our silicone pipe boot has a flexible base and can seal curved, sloped, and bumpy roofs with no problem. Generally speaking, roof exits function the best for the stove (you get the best draft) and are the most economical (cost the least) to install. Regardless of where your chimney pipe your RV, all flue systems should follow the 3-2-10 rule for the best draft and safety. The chimney opening needs to be 3′ above the roof penetration/edge of the roof, or 2′ above any part of the structure within 10′ whichever is higher.
